A New Phase

Bob O'Neill

On Monday 28th September we learnt with amazement that Reading Borough Council had chosen to reverse its earlier decision of June to work with Askett Hawke to build a hotel, flats and offices etc on King's Meadow and Lock Island. Arriving at the Cabinet meeting at which the decision was to be made we were resigned to say goodbye to nearly 7 years of campaigning and positive begging and turn into a defensive group listening and watching in order to minimise the potential damage that the Askett Hawke scheme could have created. Each of us had rebuilt our lives void of the task of restoring the Baths. However, the news was quite different and now we are having to dig out the archives and return to our posts to build an ever closer relationship with the community who we hope will make our dreams come true. If we fail we will have to live with the possibility of even more imposing changes on the Meadow and a possible loss for ever of the Baths. We are fully aware of the economic climate but we remain positive and realistic and with the support from the community, Council and an army of volunteers, know that we can make it happen. There stands on that meadow a potential leisure gem and we want it to remain public and be enjoyed by generations to come. Based on our charitable aims we hope to reach out to your readers to seek help. May I also send a word of thanks to Caversham Residents' Association and GLOBE for their support via their advice to the Council.
